Apple and Big Tech could win big with potential American takeover of Greenland

As renewed talks of a U.S. acquisition of Greenland intensify under President Donald Trump, tech investors — including backers of the Magnificent Seven companies — are closely examining the potential windfall in critical and rare earth minerals. These resources are vital for powering smartphones, electric vehicles (EVs), AI data centers, semiconductors, and advanced defense technologies.A January 12, 2026, CNBC report reveals surging interest from tech-focused investors in how American control over the Arctic island could accelerate mining projects and secure supply chains currently dominated by China.

In the past week alone, Critical Metals Corp — a NASDAQ-listed company developing a project to extract heavy rare earth elements (HREE) in Greenland — has received direct inquiries from tech investors about the impact of a U.S. takeover on its asset and development timeline. CEO Tony Sage told CNBC:

Sage said U.S. President Donald Trump’s rhetoric about Greenland had generated additional “buzz” for the project from investors. Without naming specific shareholders, he said Critical Metals Corp backers included those who invest in Magnificent Seven U.S. tech companies.

The company’s project targets heavy rare earth elements such as Yttrium, Gadolinium, Terbium, Dysprosium, Holmium, Erbium, Thulium, Ytterbium, Lutetium, and Gallium, which provide essential heat resistance and magnetic stability. Sage emphasized their strategic importance:

“These are the materials that are essential for defence technologies, robotics, semiconductors and aerospace applications. We can’t fly rockets into space, build nuclear submarines or next-generation fighter jets without these materials.”

For companies like Apple, which relies heavily on rare earths for iPhone magnets, displays, cameras, and other components — as well as broader ecosystem needs in chips and batteries — a more secure, U.S.-aligned source could reduce vulnerability to China’s export restrictions. China produced 70% of global rare earths in 2024 and imposed bans on key minerals like germanium and gallium in 2025, directly affecting AI and tech production.

Echoing this, Amaroq Minerals CEO Eldur Ólafsson highlighted the criticality of these materials in a prior CNBC interview:“When Trump put tariffs on China, the first two metals China stopped exporting were germanium and gallium,” Ólafsson told CNBC.

“Why? Because you need it in AI, you need it in defense, you need it in tech, it’s absolutely critical.”

Amaroq has confirmed commercial levels of germanium and gallium in its Greenland projects — elements indispensable for advanced AI chips and semiconductors used across Big Tech products.

With the White House “actively” discussing a potential purchase of Greenland (while not ruling out other means), and ongoing talks between U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Danish officials, a U.S. presence could streamline permitting, attract more investment, and foster direct government support for mining — as evidenced by Critical Metals Corp’s “strong relationships” with both the U.S. and Greenland governments.

While skeptics like Tracy Hughes of the Critical Minerals Institute caution that Greenland’s projects remain in early exploration stages and “won’t materially move markets in the next decade” due to complex processing requirements, the current investor “buzz” and stock surges (Critical Metals up 116% in 2026 so far) signal strong optimism among tech investors.

Additionally, Greenland is essential as a forward staging ground for missile interceptors and advanced radar systems, which would be a core component of America’s “Golden Dome” (missile defense system) architecture.

For Apple and fellow Magnificent Seven giants, Greenland joining America, likely via a Compact of Free Association (COFA), could represent a geopolitical shortcut to diversified, reliable supplies of the rare materials underpinning tomorrow’s innovations — from next-gen iPhones to AI infrastructure.

MacDailyNews Take: Even if you paid every Greenland citizen a million bucks each, it’d be a cost effective solution (population: 57,000 x $1,000,000 = $57 billion*) as Greenland joining America would be a geopolitical jackpot for both countries, Greenland citizens, the U.S. military, Apple, and Big Tech by securing rare earth minerals essential for iPhones, magnets, chips, and AI — breaking China’s rare earths hegemony and powering tomorrow’s innovations.

*For perspective, Apple alone has pledged to invest $600 billion in America over the next four years. Yes, Apple could basically buy Greenland if they so desired.

    1. What won’t?

U.S. Vice President JD Vance to host White House talks on Greenland’s future

The meeting to discuss Greenland’s future has been relocated from the State Department to the White House as U.S. Vice President JD Vance will join U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, January 14 in the talks with diplomats from Denmark and Greenland.

Vance has offered a dim assessment of the Danish government’s handling of Greenland, telling Fox News last week, “I think the president’s willing to go as far as he has to” to secure U.S. interests in Greenland.

“Denmark hasn’t done a good job at keeping Greenland safe,” the vice president asserted during his trip to the Arctic island last March.

Speaking to lawmakers during a classified briefing last week, Rubio said the president’s goal was to purchase the territory rather than seize it militarily.

Told Tuesday that Greenland’s prime minister had declared his desire that same day to remain with Denmark, Trump responded: “That’s their problem. I disagree with him. I don’t know who he is. Don’t know anything about him, but that’s going to be a big problem for him.”

  1. There is literally no reason to “secure Greenland.”
    Denmark is (was?) an ally.
USA has multiple dormant military bases they could resurrect LEGALLY to protect our interests in the region.
There is zero reason to start a war to gain access to the resources, when we could easily develop them legally and peacefully.

      1. Fascist pigs. Gain the world and lose your souls- and far more.

“All you fascists bound to lose.” – Woody Guthrie.

MAGA Morons. Greenland is not ours. Only this country of WE THE PEOPLE is.

        NO KINGS, either.

        1. America is not “broke.”

America is like a wealthy person with excellent credit who keeps maxing out new cards to fund a lavish lifestyle — they can keep going for now (and likely for a long time), but eventually the math will catch up unless abject morons (and illegal aliens) in America stop electing Democrats who institute new spending “programs” in order to facilitate their fraud and kickback schemes.

          NATIONAL VOTER ID NOW!

America can easily afford to offer every Greenland citizen $10 million dollars each to join us via COFA or becoming an unincorporated territory.

No Greenlander outside of a mental institution would refuse that. It’ll likely cost way less. They might even go for ten grand each. President Trump won’t pay more than is required as per The Art of the Deal.

Soon, President Trump, the greatest president of our lifetimes, will finally secure Greenland for America!

      2. Recent poll in January…

“…show that 85% of Greenlanders do not want to leave the Realm and become part of the United States, while 6% want to leave the Danish Realm and become part of the United States, whereas the remaining 9% are undecided.”

Sure, if Greenland amazingly decides to vote to join the USA peacefully, great, but to paraphrase the Reagan quote MDN has used so often, “The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: ‘I’m from the USA, and I’m here to help.’” That’s what Greenlanders are hearing right now.

  2. Sorry to burst your bubble. The rare earths are not that rare. But the reason for China’s dominance is not that they have something that other countries don’t. The reason for their dominance is that they have mastered the process for refining the elements in an industrially efficient manner.

America can do it. But it will take 10 years or so.

    1. Correct, there is a reason Greenland hasn’t become a major supplier of rare earths: it’s ridiculously expensive and difficult to extract them in such a hostile environment.

Brazil is estimated to have 20X the rare earth reserves as Greenland, but of course, Trump has done everything possible to make them mad. Instead of making actual deals, Trump just wants to bulldoze anyone who stands in his way.

    1. Smart people wait until they hear the offer before they decide what’s for sale.

America will get Greenland. Denmark and the rest of the EU effete really should get used to the idea.

  3. When did MDN become a Trumper? A stupid website is wanting a sovereign country to be taken over. Europe would then take over all of the US military bases instantly. Europe won’t stand by willingly. They would penalize any company of the Inited States. MDN was not too long ago crying that it couldn’t hadle posting anymore and it would shut down.. MDN should shut down and stop being a bootlicker for the Orange Cheeto.

  4. If you knew the fact that at all times, there are numerous nuclear submarines and airplanes carrying ICBMs that fly around the arctic circle and use the Greenland area as a strategic refueling point, would that change your stance on the Greenland purchase?

Denmark has claim to Greenland because of what, viking invasions 1,000 years ago?

Well, now the modern viking raiders from China have conquered Denmark and posted their emblem high above the Copenhagen skyline (google “Huawei Denmark”). No wonder China uses Greenland as a strategic base themselves… the elder vikings have bent over!

Precious metals are cherry on the cake.

Not every reason for a government initiative is spelled out in the news. I can’t believe that needs to be written.

    1. The minerals that are in Greenland aren’t worth much since the amount of money needed to get them would make them far more expensive then they are worth. The US better off mining them in the untied states or creating g a solution in with they aren’t needed.
